It maintains its form with little expansion or contraction, and is airtight. It is fire-resistant. It is sturdy while being light. These features are well known as desirable material for clothing chests to preserve valuable garments. Farming families used to plant two paulownia trees when a girl was born. It would take twenty years for them to grow tall enough to be made into a chest of drawers and a long trunk. The girl’s parents used to prepare those chests for her marriage. Paulownia wood is of such a smooth texture that it is often compared to silk, which is also well known. Sanada-himo
‘Sanada-himo braid’ is said to have been invented by Masayuki Sanada, a warlord in 1606 by improving cotton braid to make a stronger braid. The warp of Sanada-himo braid has six times as much yarn as the weft, which makes the braid strong enough to be used for kendo equipment. The Sanada-himo braid, also called ‘pledge braid’, is used to tie the wooden box for tea utensils. Patterns of the pledge braid represent what school the owner of the utensils belongs to and what origins the owner comes from. Today, this would be called ID. The braid is used for bicycle handlebars or as sandals laces for trail running. The braid withstands 3,000-kilometer trail running. The braid is durable and rich in colors, which makes it perfect for fashionable sports goods. The braid is also used for wristwatch belts and bracelets. They are getting to be so popular that production can’t keep up with the demand. We chose to use such a stylish and strong braid for the exclusive paulownia wood box for Chiffon21.
